First of all, be a moderately aggressive driver like I am, by which I mean drive 75-80mph on the expressways.

Second, discover that one of the front tires of the car is so worn that the steel cables in the rubber are poking through.

Third, have an entire weekend be lost to hospital visiting so you don't have time to get the tire replaced.

As a result, you end up driving at most 55-60mph and hyper-overcautious in general for about 2 weeks praying that the tire won't blow on you, hugging the far right lane on every expressway and avoiding expressways entirely when feasible.

You'll get about a 20 percent increase in gas mileage for your trouble. (And before you ask, yes I've now gotten said tire replaced. I wouldn't tempt fate posting this about it otherwise.)
